High Profile Part-Time Workers?
According to a New York Times article three in four Dutch women are part-time workers. But a rising number of men is catching up - one in three works part-time - and has their "Daddy Day". Most of them are young professionals, like lawers, surgeons, managers and engineers. For them it's possible to have more family time/ quality time, be productive and not to give up a career. In the Netherlands it seems to be more common and accepted to work part-time and have flexible working schedules. While also in many parts of the world there is no place for everyone in the labor market complex.
Is this the future of work?
Not for everyone but for an increasing number of knowledge workers and higher income groups it is - the best armamentarium is still an excellent education, expertise and flexibility to get more quality and money for your invested time - supported by freedom and simplified regulations.
For many others part-time jobs are an unpleasant reality in terms of low income streams. The reality of the working world in the 21st century looks still a little bit different and is not only a matter of culture or the wealth of a nation. Mostly it's how we learned and think work has to be and what kind of working conditions are required to be efficient still based on the industrialization (18th - 19th century) which means not necessarily to be creative, sustainable and productive .
